What Happened In This Case?

In Anaheim, California, Lam Nguyen, a 44-year-old mother, attempted to shield her 22-year-old daughter, Nhung Pham, from a pickup truck that ran into them while they stood in the crowd. The pickup truck driver was seen doing “donuts” and “burnouts” in front of the crowd at the fireworks show on the 4th of July. However, the mother of the driver claims that her son’s truck axle was broken and caused his truck to spin out.

The incident left Nguyen with severe brain trauma, collapsed lungs, broken torso and arms, multiple skull fractures, a lacerated liver, and broken pelvis and legs. She was diagnosed with the most severe category of traumatic brain injury, a Grade 3 diffuse axonal injury. The DAI caused her to be in a two-week-long coma. Nguyen’s entire body suffered internal and external damage, making it difficult to fight off a high-grade fever.

Nhung Pham underwent multiple surgeries to fix broken femurs, broken ribs, broken pelvis, internal bleeding, punctured liver and kidney, and numerous lacerations. A permanent rod has been inserted into her femur to keep it stabilized. The accident left her wheelchair-bound, undergoing physical therapy.

The Statistics Behind Traumatic Brain Injuries

According to the CDC, approximately 166 victims die from a traumatic brain-related injury every day. TBI’s may have short-term and long-term health complications, including:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Dizzy spells
  • Sensitivity to light and noise
  • Visual difficulties
  • Fatigue
  • Seizures
  • Impaired memory
  • Depression and anxiety

Severe enough brain damage can lead to long-term neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Traumatic brain injury victims’ condition tends to decline over the years. At the five-year mark, 22% of the victims die, and 30% of symptoms worsen.

The most common ways a person may get a TBI includes:

  • Falls
